The maintenance of agricultural machinery begins with regular checks and planned inspections based on the farm’s operations. Oil change is one of the essential maintenance operations, as engine and other component protection depends on proper lubrication. Delaying a scheduled maintenance can increase wear and the risk of downtime during periods when every working day matters.
The oil reduces friction, contributes to the dissipation of heat and protects the components. During operation, it can degrade and become contaminated, even if the level remains correct. Therefore, checking the quantity and replacing it in time are two distinct operations, both necessary.
At what times is the oil changed on agricultural machinery?
The oil changes at the interval specified by the manufacturer for the model and circuit in question. If the manual indicates both operating hours and a calendar term, the limit reached first is respected. There is no uniform number of hours applicable to the entire fleet, and the engine, transmission, and hydraulic system may have different intervals.
The conditions that allow the application of the interval also matter: the type of oil, the filter used, the fuel and the operating regime. For operation in severe conditions, the specific requirements in the manual must be followed. On a new machine or on a repaired assembly, a different initial replacement of the interval may occur.
When the oil changes on the tractor
The engine oil, transmission and hydraulic oils are monitored separately on the tractor, as well as the oils in the drives or reducers, where they exist. The change is programmed when the maintenance interval of each circuit approaches, without waiting for the end of the campaign. Before a busy period, the remaining hours until the overhaul are compared with the estimated workload.
The oil level must be checked at the intervals and under the conditions recommended by the manufacturer. John Deere engine oils They are selected according to the engine specifications, and the use of a product that allows extended operating intervals does not automatically mean that the recommended replacement interval for the tractor can be extended as well.
When the oil is changed in the combine and the harvesting equipment
At the combine, the interval for changing the engine oil is determined based on the number of hours the engine operates, according to the instructions in the manual, and should not be confused with the operating hours of the separation system. The hydraulic system, the reducers, and the front equipment have their own maintenance intervals. Even if the machine is used only a few months a year, the calendar maintenance periods provided by the manufacturer must also be observed.
The replacement intervals can vary from one model to another. For example, for engine oil, the interval is 500 hours in the case of the forage combine John Deere F8 600 and 750 hours for John Deere F9 500. These values are valid only for the mentioned models and under the conditions specified in the manual, and cannot be generalized for all combinations.
When the oil is changed in telescopic loaders
Telescopic loaders and other handling equipment can be used throughout the year, including outside agricultural campaigns. Oil change intervals are monitored according to the maintenance plan of each model, separately for the engine, transmission, hydraulic system and axles.
Maintenance also includes periodic checking of levels, as well as identifying any losses in hoses, connections, and casings. In the case of transmissions, the type of transmission oil and the replacement interval must be determined based on the type of transmission of the machine and the manufacturer's recommendations.
When the oil is changed in herbicide-spraying machines
In self-propelled herbicide spraying machines, the engine and transmission or hydraulic circuits are maintained according to their own hourly and time intervals. In towed or carried equipment, the pump and the drive mechanisms are checked separately: some have an oil bath, others have a different construction.
The pump oil should be changed at the term indicated in its manual, including after a change of oil if a first change is provided for. If the oil becomes milky, it may indicate contamination with water or solution and requires a check before resuming work. In this situation, the scheduled inspection is not expected, and the cause of the contamination must be remedied as soon as possible.
When the oil is changed on towed and carried machinery
The baling presses, balers, harvesters, seeders, fertilizer distributors and certain trailers may have their own reducers or hydraulic circuits. For these, the exchange is done at the interval of the respective assembly, after hours or time, if the manufacturer provides for periodic replacement. A possible initial exchange after harvest is separately respected.
A plug or a sprocket without an oil bath or its own circuit does not require a „oil change” comparable to that of a tractor. The lubrication points with petroleum jelly have other requirements. Also, in a chain lubrication press, the refueling of the consumed oil tank should not be confused with the oil change in the reducer. The type of oil must be chosen according to the specifications of the reducer, transmission or assembly in question.
When the oil is changed in the motor pumps and irrigation systems
In diesel-powered pumps, the engine oil change is determined according to the operating hours and the calendar term specified in the engine manual. During extended irrigation periods, the expiration date may be reached before the end of the season. The pump, reducer or other mechanisms may require separate maintenance depending on the construction.
Electropumps do not use engine oil, because they are electrically driven. Depending on the equipment’s construction, certain components, such as bearings or reducers, may require lubrication and periodic maintenance operations, in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. For irrigation systems composed of multiple components, the maintenance plan must be established separately for each equipment and assembly, and IPSO services for irrigation they can be relevant for the verification and maintenance of the system.
What mistakes delay oil changes and what are the correct practices
A maintenance plan is only useful if the intervals are monitored during work. Some common habits can lead to their exceeding or an incomplete overhaul.
- Wrong: the exchange is postponed until the end of the campaign. An urgent work does not extend the time allowed by the manufacturer.
Correct: The inspection is scheduled before the limit is exceeded, and the oil and filters are prepared in advance. If the remaining hours are insufficient for the campaign, the intervention can be planned before its start.
- Wrong: only the operating hours are tracked. A machine that has been used little can reach its calendar term before the hourly limit.
Correct: The date and the hour counter are recorded at each change and both deadlines are monitored, when they are provided for in the manual.
- Incorrect: Level completion is considered sufficient. The added oil does not remove the contaminants and does not automatically restore the properties of the entire amount.
Correct: The level remains within the prescribed limits, and the full exchange remains on schedule. The need for frequent corrections is being investigated.
- Wrong: The switch is decided only based on color or the appearance of a warning. Color alone does not indicate the oil’s condition, and a pressure warning should not be interpreted as a sign that it is time for a checkup.
Correct: The maintenance plan is followed and warnings are responded to according to the manual. The milky appearance, persistent foam, or unusual odor justify a technical check; an oil analysis can complement the diagnosis.
- Wrong: the same oil and the same interval are used for all circuits. The engine and transmission may have different requirements even on the same machine.
Correct: Before the intervention, the oil specification and the replacement interval for each circuit are checked. John Deere lubricants range includes distinct categories of products, which are selected according to the requirements of the equipment.
- Wrong: the oil is changed, but the expired filter is omitted. An incomplete inspection does not comply with the maintenance plan.
Correct: the operations associated with the exchange are checked, the provided filters are replaced, and clean containers and accessories are used. John Deere filters It is identified by the model and series of the machine.
